Pages are created in the Page Composer. Pages are either Published or in Draft, they are hierarchical and maximum two levels deep. Only published pages are visible to the public, if a parent page is a draft then none of its children will be visible to the public either. Pages can have different layouts provided by the site theme. Parent pages can be asigned to Site Navigation, parent pages with children will also have Page Navigation.
The Page Composer is consisted of three parts the Editor, Topbar and Sidebar.
The editor for writing pages is a Markdown editor based on Editor.md, it allows you to use HTML, CSS and Markdown.
When the editor is in focus, type
Shift + Alt + H will bring up a Help Dialog to show you the rest of the keyboard shortcuts the editor has.
The Media Gallery is integrated to the Editor. You can also drag & drop image files to the browser.
The Topbar shows a list of buttons that allows you to Publish, Update, Save, Auto-save, Preview and Close the page.
Your work is auto-saved after typing stops for a few seconds (default 10 sec). If you continue to type after a short break but before the threshold is reached it won’t carry out auto-save. When auto-save happens you will see a disabled text
⚠️ It’s only for drafts. When you make changes to a published page, auto-save won’t save your work to prevent accidently showing your unfinished work to the public.
⚠️ When a page is in draft, itself and its children if any will not be visible to the public.
Under certain conditions by design auto-save will not happen
- When you make changes to the content of a page that is published (this is just discussed above)
- When you make changes to elements on the sidebar or page title, not in the editor
In these circumstances, you have to click on the save button to save the content.
Depending whether the post is published or a draft, you would see a Publish or Update button. The post title is the only thing that is required, when that is missing the button will be disabled.
The Sidbar contains post information such as post status, date etc.
For quick changes to a published post, you just make your changes and hit Publish. But if you find yourself making lengthy changes, I recommend you Rever the post back to draft, so that autosave can help you save.
Pages show your last updated date. You can choose any year, month and date, the time will just be the time you hit Publish.
The gist of what your page is about, it’s used as the meta description.
Theme designers can create different layouts for pages to suit different scenarios. For example, the default theme Clarity has 3 layouts. The layouts are defined in the theme's manifest file
Unlike the Post Composer, on the Sidebar you do not see Slug input for URL. A page’s URL is calculated from its title. Page URLs come right after the site root. The page title must be unique from its siblings.
A parent page with at least one child will have the ability to create a page navigation, like the one shown here on the sidebar of Docs. Make sure you have the PageNavigation widget placed in the according sidebar area. The page navigation has its own editor, and a special double square brackets that surrounds page titles are used as links.
